Winter Training Can Be Fun!

Now that winter is well and truly upon us, the heady summer evenings and the long runs on a warm weekend will seem like a distant memory! But how do you keep the motivation to train in the cold, wet and darkness of the winter months in the UK and still enjoy your running?

One of the great ways to keep motivated and not lose your running mojo is to get involved in your local running club.

Winter training with like-minded runners is a fantastic way to keep up your race fitness. Knowing that you have dates in your diary every week is a great motivation to lace up your shoes and head out whatever the weather. Running with friends helps boost morale in the cold and wet, it’s generally safer running in a group at night, and you’ll find the different sessions help keep you competitive, fit, and on-track for your Spring races!

This year, I’ve been taking advantage of the fantastic weekly sessions held at Natterjack Running – a running shop run by, and for, runners – which leads a mixed-ability session on an hour-long training run around Liverpool city centre.

Each session is different, but generally alternates weekly between an 8-10k steady run, interval training, and hill reps. From a city centre base we not only have the advantage of a fantastic central location to run the historic waterfont and docks, but we also head up to Everton to check out the the stunning night-time views (and hills…) or the south parks for strides/fartlek. Natterjack’s also provide a changing room, toilet facilities, a post-run recovery drink and energy bars – you’re led by experienced runners, and it’s free.

Occasionally we’ll go further afield via the metro, and head north to run the pinewoods and sand dunes of Formby¬† – this is a world-class foot surface that really has to be run on to be believed!

Winter training needn’t be a chore, and Liverpool offers so many fascinating running routes for the new and experienced runner. So why not join your local club or come along to the store on a Monday night if you’re visiting Liverpool?
